Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez Accused of Making Racist Comments About Colleague’s Black Son

Dusty behavior…

When individuals disregard the existence of systemic racism, they are choosing to ignore cases like that of Nury Martinez. Martinez holds the position of the president of the Los Angeles City Council, responsible for various aspects of Angelinos’ lives. According to a recent Los Angeles Times report, she holds contempt for many. The recorded audio, obtained by the outlet, captures Martinez referring to a white council member named Mike Bonin in derogatory terms with councilmen Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera. Martinez can be heard using a racial slur to describe Bonin’s Black son, calling him “changuito”, which translates to “little monkey”. She also made derogatory remarks about Bonin, suggesting that “Bonin thinks he’s f**king Black.”

Oh, but it doesn’t end there! Martinez’s prejudice extends beyond Bonin’s Black child to encompass all Black individuals…

There is now a growing call for Martinez to resign from her council seat or face removal through a vote.

For his part, Bonin released a statement expressing his outrage and repulsion at Martinez’s comments.

Martinez issued an “apology” statement to CNN, which appears insincere, stating:

“In a moment of intense frustration and anger, I let the situation get the best of me and I hold myself accountable for these comments. For that I am sorry,” Martinez said in a statement to CNN.
