The fashion community, as well as fans, continue to be in shock after the apparent suicide of Kate Spade on Tuesday, but now her husband, Andy Spade has released a statement.
Spade, the famous retail icon who created accessible handbag Kate Spade, was discovered dead in her Manhattan Upper East Side home on Tuesday morning. As per sources, Spade’s housekeeper found her hanging in her bedroom and called the police. A suicide note has also been discovered at the scene; however, the police officials have not disclosed any more details.
According to Andy and Kate’s sister, Kate had had a mental illness since years, and Andy accepted the fact that he and Kate had unofficially separated ten months ago but there were no plans of divorce.
Andy, who spoke publically for the very first time following Kate’s death, said that Kate was battling from anxiety and depression and was undergoing treatment since the last five years. The doctors had also prescribed her medications for the condition which she had been taking. As per Andy, she was not on any alcohol or drug.
He told The New York Times, “We were in touch with her the night before, and she sounded happy. There was no indication and no warning that she would do this. It was a complete shock. And it wasn’t her. There were personal demons she was battling.”
On the other hand, Kate’s sister, Reta Saffo said that Kate’s death was ‘not unexpected’ via an email to The Kansas City Star, adding that her sister had a mental illness. Saffo further said that she had tried to help her sister get in-patient hospitalization treatments many times in last few years and felt that all the pressure of her brand Kate Spade may have taken a toll and made her a manic depressive.
